Karcher Hot Water High Pressure Cleaners

How to choose a high pressure cleaner

There are a great many high pressure cleaners on the market, and it is therefore very important to know how to choose the correct one for the job in hand. By far, the majority of this type of cleaner is the one which uses high pressure water, though there are other types.

A high pressure cleaner is essentially a mechanical device which pressurises water, and uses it to remove dirt from a variety of different surfaces. The dirt may be mould, grime, mud, or just dust, but can also be an applied surface, such as paint or powder coating. The surface from which it is to be removed could be a vehicle, a wall, or even the road surface.

Any one manufacturer may have a large range of different machines, which operate at different pressures, and can be used in different applications. This type of equipment can operate using water pressure of up to 180bar, and because of this pressure, great care should be taken when using this type of machine, since the water jet is quite capable of removing flesh from the bone! It may also remove and propel small items from the surface being cleaned with great and dangerous velocity.

Most high pressure cleaners source their power from an electrical outlet, though there are petrol driven machines which can be used in the case that there is no electrical power source. Wherever the machine is used, there must be an adequate supply of water - in fact, the water supply should be greater than the demand, otherwise cavitation may occur in the pressurising pump, and that could cause irreparable damage.

Caution should be taken when directing a jet of high pressure water at asphalt, since the water enters cracks in the surface layer, and can end up stripping and breaking up the surface.

Typical uses of high pressure cleaners are for the cleaning of old buildings or monuments or the removal of graffiti. Several different nozzles of varied cross section may be used - these cause different effects in the water stream, such as a spiralling stream or a triangular stream, each of which has a specific use.

Depending on the cleaner, it may be possible to inject detergent into the water stream to help in the cleaning process.
